Happy Holidays

I'm in WV right now, so I don't get the opportunity to come to the library to check the web very often... so this is probably the only thing I will post while here. I just wanted to wish everyone a very happy holiday season!

One Christmas down, One to go...

Ah, Christmas! Nick and I had our own little Christmas together this year, since we will both be in our respective parents' homes for our "real" Christmas day. We decorated the house nicely. . . I bought a tree and some decorations and we wrapped all our presents and had some under the tree for awhile before we decided to open them, this past Wednesday night. I took this picture Wednesday night, with a cell phone, before we opened our gifts. We had a lot of trouble getting a good picture with a cell phone because it was so dim. The only lights we had lit were the tree and the the little Christmas lights around the house. Then we settled in for gift opening.

So Nick opened the first present. I decided it would be a good idea to take a picture before he opened it ... (sorry about the weird background).

It was a digital camera! So we decided to snap some photos with it... Here is the picture of the tree, in the same lighting as the one taken by the cell phone. It is soooo much more clear.

So for the rest of the gift opening, we took turns opening gifts. Here we both are by our mountains of presents...

I got lots of really awesome gifts:

- Carla Harryman's new book of poetry, Baby. It is an awesome book. She does some really weird stuff, which I love! I'm pretty psyched about it.
- Karaoke Revolution for the Nintendo Gamecube... It's a sweet game! I love it. I got a dance mat too, so I can have the entire experience. It's a lot of fun to play.
- Gloves to keep my fingers warm :)
- Myst, a computer game... it requires a lot of creative thought. I really like it alot too. So much fun to play.
- A down comforter. I wanted one so bad... and now I have one. It's an awesome dark blue with a microsuede top. It's really comfy.
- The most awesome pair of tennisshoes in the entire world!!!!
- A pretty green sweater!
- A string of pearls and pearl earrings. They are so beautiful. I will have to take a picture of them so everyone can see how nice they are.

Nick got:
- A digital camera
- Tickets to see Low in concert
- A capcom classics game for the Xbox
- A game called, Cubivore, for the Gamecube.
- lots of chocolates
- A bathrobe
- A plug -n- play Lord of the Rings game (which is cool, cause you wave your sword at the TV and it fights people...)
- A keyboard. (the kind that plays music, not the kind for a computer.)

All in all, we had an AWESOME Christmas. I'm so happy.

Dumb da Dumb Dumb -- Dumb da Dumb Dumb DUUUUUUMB!

I'm so dumb.

I was just looking at 88's website. I sent some work to them a couple months ago and just thought I'd glance at some back issues tonight when I wasn't busy.

I just saw that they only read from March to May... I swear I thought I read their reading period the other way around... I thought they didn't read from March to May but that they read every other month.

Anyway... So now I have work there that isn't even going to get looked at. I'm going to have to find another home for those poems. Dang - I really wanted to get in that magazine.

I guess I will try again in March with some other stuff.

To Watch List:

I have a problem. I buy movies and never watch them... Don't even have the interest to watch them. Case in point:

1) Million Dollar Baby -- This movie isn't ever getting watched. I'm not a Hilary Swank fan... I'm not a boxing fan... Why did I buy it? TF told me it was a good movie, and even though she too, didn't have any desire to watch it at first, it was worth it and that I would love it. So, I bought it. It's been on my shelf, unopened, since... which means approximately 3 or 4 months.

2) Hotel Rwanda -- Everyone seems to think this movie is politically and humanitarily important. So I bought it. Problem is, I don't like anything political... I don't like history or current events... I cry easily if babies or animals are harmed... I fear that happening in this movie. So - it's been on my shelf for a while now.

3) A Very Long Engagement -- Okay, Nick bought this one, but it's still on the shelf, we haven't watched it. Reason? It's a foreign film... I just don't ever seem to feel like reading subtitles - it makes me miss what's going on onscreen. I really enjoy foreign films when I do watch them... It just always takes some pushing to get me in the mood... for that kind of movie. So, it's still on the shelf.

4) House of D -- I bought it because I love Robin Williams... I haven't watched it because I've never heard of it and so I always end up watching something that I know I'll enjoy. I will watch it someday... but it's been on the shelf for a little while now and will probably stay there for a little while longer.

5) Popeye, Tom & Jerry, and 1940s Cartoons -- I bought these at the dollar store because it was a good deal and I love Tom & Jerry. They are still in their wrapping, unopened. We almost watched Popeye the other day... but as soon as he came off the shelf, another movie came with him and he ended up just sitting on the coffee table for the next several days.

The best place these movies could be right now is in my pocket, in dollar form.

Catface

Hmm... I just discovered the most interesting word. I'm totally going to have to utilize it, either in a poem or in a conversation.

“ Catface” is a term for describing misshapen fruit with scars and holes on blossom end. Possible causes are cold weather with night temperatures 58 F or lower at flowering time, high nitrogen levels, and herbicide injury. The tomato varieties with very large fruits are more susceptible. (Urbanext)

The tomato in this picture is an example of a catfaced fruit. Isn't that awesome! :)

My Day...

- $50 parking ticket
- An order that I placed weeks ago was cancelled, I have to reorder it.
- Notified that I did NOT get the job here.
- Found out I have $18 in my bank account right now.

Needless to say, I've been pretty depressed since about 5 this afternoon when all of this started.

I did find a couple job openings at University of Akron... Maybe I'll have better luck there... and maybe another position will open here next semester.

*sigh*

The Pepperoni Roll!

It always boggles my mind when I talk about pepperoni rolls and no one knows what it is that I'm talking about. Everyone thinks they know what a pepperoni roll is - but really, unless you live in WV or the bordering areas of MD and PA, no one has any idea. I guess I shouldn't be surprised... Pepperoni rolls were invented in Fairmont, WV - my hometown... so they are very familiar to me. Most people think I mean "pizza rolls" or something similar to that when I talk about them, but that is nothing like what a pepperoni roll is.

Why don't many people know what a pepperoni roll is? Because it's illegal in most states to bake meat that is unseen in bread -- weird... but true. So the pepperoni roll has never really caught on.

So what is a pepperoni roll? Well... Thanks to Bob Heffner you can find out.

Bob describes the roll as this:

"A pepperoni roll is a few thin slices of pepperoni baked in a soft, golden oval of slightly sweet dough, smaller than a dinner roll. They aren't 'bready' and they aren't tough and hard like pizza crust.

The contrast between the soft, sweet roll and its spicy filling is very satisfying. They are great while warm, just fine a day later. You usually just eat them out of your hand, although some restaurants (like Colasessano's in Fairmont) split them open and serve them hot from the oven topped with marinara sauce and melted cheese."

There are so many other neat things on the webpage that you can check out. You can get recipes, find the history of the pepperoni roll, learn a little bit about Fairmont (where I'm from) and some other cool stuff. I suggest everyone check it out for a minute.

For those of you in MAR tomorrow... I will be bringing some homemade pepperoni rolls to the potluck. It is a family recipe - not one from the page - and they are a little bit different than the ones on that page because the dough doesn't get quite as fluffy... but they are fairly representative of the wonderful treat that you are missing out on!

I love pepperoni rolls... they are so yum! (The picture is of some pepperoni rolls from Country Club Bakery, the creators of the pepperoni roll - I've eaten there... they are good -- Some pepperoni rolls look a little different than those pictured... but they are all fairly similar)
